Hello. My name is Laurent Gabriel, and I’m the owner of Elite Professional Dog Training. I’m located in Winter Park, but I serve all of Central Florida. I’m going to talk about how dogs learn at their own pace so manage expectations of your dog.
Ten years of working with my next-door neighbor gave me the confidence and the ability to understand how dogs move, how they work, but then also how to speak properly and convey the message to not only the dog but the owner as to why their dogs are doing certain things and how to accomplish the goals of what you want.
Every Dog Learns On Their Own
Now, just because I give you the tools doesn’t mean that everything’s going to happen automatically. Every dog learns on their own. It’s only until the dog accepts it is when the goal is accomplished. I’ll give you an example.
Dogs Affected By Trauma
One of my dogs I had, I think it was a Rottweiler. He was three years old, tied up in a backyard. Kids would throw rocks at him, tease him. So naturally, instead of being aggressive, he was fearful. This was back in 2008, and I took the dog in for three months.
Now, from when I had him until he went home, you saw a dramatic change. He had his obedience training. I could take him out in public. He was still leery because the trust factor of outside elements just wasn’t there. You’ve got to remember he’s three years behind.
It wasn’t until a year later that I saw a drastic change. He actually reminded me of a normal dog. He got along well with other dogs, other people. You can just see in the eyes that he said, “finally, I’m home.”
Dogs Have Certain Calibers
Now we have to remember, when you’re working with your dog, when you’re coming to me, I’m going to tell you this, certain dogs have certain calibers.
Pro Athlete vs. Middle School vs. Elementary
For instance, everybody wants that pro athlete, but sometimes that athlete may just have the capabilities of middle school or elementary or high school.
Some dogs may not even be athletes. They may be chemists like humans, chemists, doctors, engineers, politicians, you name it. It just depends on the dog.
I’ll Be Blunt About Expectations Of Your Dog
So always take that into consideration because when you go to a trainer or you come to me, I’m going to give you the real deal. I’m going to be blunt and honest with you because I don’t want to set your expectations too high.
It’s Not Going To Be Easy
I’m going to give you what I think we can accomplish. And then sometimes the dog will fool you, and all of a sudden, the dog exceeds your expectations. I’m just there, here, to make you understand what you have, how we’re going to accomplish your goal, and it’s not going to be an easy road.
